Slimline PSP Gets Date and Price In Japan

PLUS: Digital TV!

Posted by Staff
Sony has confirmed the exact launch date and pricing of the new slimmer PSP in Japan. Japanese PSP owners will also be able to get their hands on a peripheral that will allow them to watch Digital TV through the handheld.

The slimmer PSP, which was announced at E3 last week, will go on sale on September 20th in Japan at a retail price of ¥19,800 (£79). The slimline PSP is due out in September in both Europe and the US, but no specific date or price has been revealed.

Japanese Sony fans will also be able to get their hands on the digital TV tuner below on September 20th. The peripheral will cost ¥6,980 and will use Japan's 1seg broadcast service for mobile digital TV.

1seg, after a year and a half in operation, still has its faults, with signal difficult to pick up in moving vehicles and signal drop out common. Still, the service does bring the PSP yet another step closer to being the multimedia device Sony always touted it as.

Is the PSP finally getting to a position where it can compete with Nintendo's DS? Answers in the Forum please.

Compete with the DS...eeuh no...they first need more then a dozen of real portable games. Lumines and LocoRoco are those, watered down PS2-ports are not.

I think Sony understands this, they just can't make the third party developers understand it.

If we get it for a decent price should be interesting. Do I need another.?..well...no.

Compete with DS? Lol....it's already far too late for that. It was reasoanble dead after a year, and its no different after two. Just worse.

£80 in japan = £130 in the UK, 100% bet that we will get ripped off big time.

Well I already have one of the current ones, which I got from Ebay for a reasonable £70. It works fine so I'll skip this.

Joji, do you ever look into these things? Currently PSP has about 33% of the worldwide handheld market. That's not dead by anybody's estimation. It's more alive than either Xbox or GameCube were last gen.

Well, that is a long sentence.

Anwyay, I don't think the PSP will compete properly with the DS - it's aimed at different people (mostly), a bad implementation of a potentially good idea, as usual (I would say the DS is the opposite, apart from wifi!). Anyway, the DS is too far ahead, basically - and better. I think its whole lifespan will generally be analogous to its launch - sounds like a good idea, but not as successful as what people thought (in terms of popularity).

Anyway, who cares about the competition, just buy whatever you want, there's no need to care about anything else. Except it means more people to play with on wifi :P

So, ultimately, though - if, hypothetically, I wasn't intending to get a PSP (but thinking about it), what about the new one is going to seriously convince me to get one? Oh, yeah, it's the games that make the difference, and maybe the cost. Forgot about that (genuinely, but it's ironic, isn't it?).
