UPDATED: Sony Ericsson PSP Phone – Pics and Details
Is mobile phone gaming finally going to be worth bothering with?
UPDATE: SCEE's CEO David Reeves has denied any knowledge about a proposed PSP phone and SPOnG has contacted Sony Ericsson for further comment - more details here.
Sony Ericsson has recently filed a patent which indicates that a PSP phone might be due soon, as you can see from a diagram included in the patent, right here.
You can see that the proposed design features both a moveable screen, which swivels 90-degrees into widescreen mode, along with gaming controllers which look very similar to the current PSP model.
The proposed PSP phone follows on from other Sony Ericsson phone models such as the Walkman branded music player phones and Cybershot branded camera phones.
SPOnG will be digging around to find out more about the PSP phone in the run up to E3 over the coming weeks, where we will no doubt also be hearing more from Nokia regarding the proposed relaunch of its N-Gage gaming phone.
Are mobile phone games about to finally be worth a look in?
For the full unexpurgated detail on the patent you can check the original filing right here.
Psst.
Nokia aren't 'relaunching their N-Gage gaming phone'.
The new incarnation of the 'N-Gage' is an app that runs on new high end nokias.. no?
Imagine a PSP as you see one now, but with a touch screen for the phone functionality. Couple of holes for the mic and speaker and you're done.
Less, "you're done" and more "It's done for".
I (like you Tyrion) am prepared to lunk a big phone around if the functionality is good enough (email, GPS, web browsing works for me and my MDA Compact). But unless it had both a "Solve World Hunger" AND a "Cure Cancer" button there's no phone (iPhone included) that I would carry around if it was as big as a PSP.

Right. Last time i walked around with a cellphone that size was back in '92.
Except of course, the N-Gage was less "fine" and more "OK" for games!

that looks a bit gash....
Trying to find the words to express what i feel...
Wait! I know!
BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
The PSP is clumsy/big enough as it is for a portable, let's try making a phone out of it! Well, if it doesn't work for you, looks like you could still beat someone to death with it. So it may not be completely useless.

This seem to be sony new thing at the moment, if something doesn't do well or work......turn it into something else!!. What are they like the A-Team or something!?!?, next they'll be turning cabbages into armored vehicles!!.... ahhhh I loved that episode.
Yes, because it will look exactly like that patent image, exactly the same. Do you guy have nothing better to do?
Yer i got plenty to do, but i'm at work & this is more fun!....that alright with you?
Eh, no, it will probably not look exactly like that... but even when trying really hard, i cannot think of a PSP phone that has the functionality of a PSP (big-ass screen, control stick, buttons etc) plus being a cell phone you can actually USE as one.

Seems like competition for iPhone. Don't think I'm bothered though. Doubt if it'd sell with iPhone being the daddy of mobiles.
Damn Sony, you already have a PSP. Just sort the games out, already.

Maybe it will be exactly like the original N-gage. Fine for games but crap as a phone, and you'll also look stupid while doing it.
