Bill Gates' involvement with Microsoft's game development wing may be about as deep as his knowledge of football (trans: Soccerball) but this didn't stop the world's most giving guy from 'doing an England' and losing out on an Xbox-based penalty shoot-out this week.

Gates was beaten 2-1 by Mexico and FC Barcelona defender, Rafael Marquez, in Mexico City. The humiliation was public, as the two played on a stage in front of hundreds of Mexican Microsoft employees.

When asked by Marquez if he fancied a bit of a flutter, Gates responded, "I wouldn't bet all of my money on it." Good for him, SPOnG reckons. It's killer business acumen like that, after all, that's made him the world's richest man.

Gates was in Mexico to commemorate Microsoft's 20th anniversary there, hob nob with officials and promote use of technology to make Mexico a nicer, more profitable place.

What surprised SPOnG was that Gates even bothered to put his hands on a games console in the first place. Doesn't he have better things to do these days, like telling us about bus stops that talk to your phone?

Poor old Bill, he probably thought his days of getting his arse handed to him by Jocks were over when he got his first bodyguard. Still, he's not a sore loser and handed a signed 360 over to Marquez in exchange for a signed footy shirt.
