John Carmack, of
Quake fame, has spoken about his feelings on the next generation of gaming at CES. He's not anticipating a repeat of the last two generations with Sony dominating the market.
The iD Software co-founder and technical director said of Sony in a recent interview, "I suspect they're not going to overwhelmingly crush the marketplace this time, which wasn't clear a year ago… A lot of people were thinking it's going to be a rerun of the last generation, and it's now looking like it might not be."
He cited his reasons for the claim as technical, opining: "I think the decision to use an asymmetric CPU by Sony was a wrong one. There are aspects that could make it a winning decision, but they're not helpful to the developers."
In a blunt manner he went on to state:
"I've been pulling for Microsoft, because I think they've done a better job for development support, and I think they have made somewhat smarter decisions on the platform. It's not like the PlayStation 3 is a piece of junk or anything … they just took a design decision that wasn't the best from a development standpoint."†
Carmack, who has had a frosty (some might say non-existent) relationship with Nintendo since censorship issues with
Wolfenstein 3D on the SNES, is apparently becoming friends the Kyoto-company once again. Speaking of his recent mobile game he said: "We're hoping to do a DS game version of Orcs and Elves, moving over and enhancing the cell phone game on there, which would be our first real direct entry back into the Nintendo world."
