Microsoft Seeks to Monopolise on PlayStation 3 Shortage in Japan

Microsoft Seeks to Monopolise on PlayStation 3 Shortage in Japan
Microsoft will cut the price of the Xbox 360 in Japan in an attempt to cash in on the cripplingly low launch allocation the country received yesterday from Sony, when outlining its PlayStation 3 Day One plans in the territory.

The Core Xbox 360 Pack will be hitting retail for 29,800 yen (around £135GB) and re-launch on November 2. America and Europe already have access to this version of the Xbox, though for Japanese consumers it's a revised look at a console they probably wouldn't bother picking up from stores if it were free.

Of course, in lieu of buying a PlayStation 3, Japanese gamers are bound to flock to Nintendo's Wii, which is likely to launch in Japan in great number for £30GB less than Microsoft's new stab at a market that simply doesn't want to know.

I supposed its up to the japanese public. If they do buy 360 and Wii that's good for both. I get the impression the Wii will take the cake with the DS though. Makes sense that MS take advantage of the situation though, good luck to them.

So many strong titles on DS right now and Wii is bound to have enough to tempt many, especially with that cheap price.

One things for sure, this is gonna be the best xmas for Nintendo yet globally. Don't forget LoZ is also due pretty soon too and that should also clean up money like a Dyson.

#of topic# The Wii seems to suck now, all next/new gen systems seem to, here are my resons why I will not buy each of the next/new gen systems.

Playstation 3

1. Way to f**king expensive
2. Blue-Ray my ass! I don't want it, so I would be spending that much money on nothing
3. Few games attract me
4. Not sure of its success so not many good games might coome out on it and (I might be a minority-(Which I don't really care about)

Wii

1. S**t graphics: I'm not a graphics hoarde/hoar, I don't need amazing graphics, but from what I've seen they are disgusting, 2-3 times more powerful then cube? well they seem like crappy cube (sometimes n 64) graphics to me.
2. Few games I'm looking forward to, one of the two amazing games (the one that will probably be the best game ever) is coming out also on cube and the other is not coming out until 2007
3. Little 3rd party support: History has proven that nintendo always has the least 3rd party support and the least number of excellent games ( If only the n 64 used cd's instead of cartridges, nintendo might have been in a very different position)although this seems to be changing.
4. Though I'm quite sure the Wii will succeed and 3rd party will increase, most of the games will probably focus on non/casual gamers.

Xbox 360

1. EXTREMELY few games attract me
2. Always seem to lack japaneesy/japaneesy RPG games which I seem to like alot.
3. Very/quite expensive.
4. Not enough games that DON'T belong in the genre 1st person shooter (that are good)

There you go. I will wait until we're well into next-gen and then decide which if any to get. Xbox 360 i just don't like, and I'll probably never efford a ps3 so the Wii is my most likeliy candidate.

PS: I almost forgot the most important negative thing about the Wii, not enough adult orientated games (although this seems to be changing too)

PS again: These are just the negative things about each console, there are many positive things about each one e.g revolutionary controller, amazing graphics, great online service but that's not my point.

I just downed my lunch real quick so I could reply to your STUPID comments.

It either seems you dont know what you want as you are obviously cluess about gaming from your above comments or you parents said no you cannot have a new games console.

The Wii isnt even out yet for you to compare nor is the PS3.

The Xbox 360 by far has a mix of many different games and is the best choice overall for everything.

The Wii has mature games also remember Res Evil? Also if you say the vid on the new game with sword fighting you will know that it is NOT a kids game nor is FarCry which is coming to the Wii also.

You need to grow up and not make such stupid comments.

The Wii has mature games also remember Res Evil? Also if you say the vid on the new game with sword fighting you will know that it is NOT a kids game nor is FarCry which is coming to the Wii also.

That's why I said not ENOUGH, I didn't say it doesn't have any at all, and that's why I said this seems to be CHANGING. Read my comments carefully before being rude.

Also if you say the vid on the new game with sword fighting you will know that it is NOT a kids game

It's called Red Steel

Such a constructive, well-balanced argument ;).

There's also this which looks interesting from Nintendo itself:

The 360 does have a range of decent, non-FPS games both on the way and out. Saints Row, Dead Rising, Lego Star Wars II, PGR3 and Oblivion (don't like the fact it looks "so FPS"? Click the joystick and go 3rd person then!) are all out now, and on the way there's Lost Planet, Assassin's Creed, Forza Motorsport, Pro Evo 6, Splinter Cell Double Agent... In fact, there aren't that many FPS games out: just PDZ, GRAW, Battlefield MC, CoD2, Far Cry and Quake 4. I'd hardly say 6 was "nearly all".

But none of that matters in Japan. None of it. Japan's quite a self-obsessed country when it comes to economics, sticking mainly to its own companies when it comes to everything but cars (European cars show class, apparently). Microsoft has effectively marched into their industry (nearly all the home console manufacturers have been Japanese, and the big 3 all are), and they react as expected: derision, disinterest and total blackout of sales.

You, Spong say: " Microsoft will cut the price of the Xbox 360 in Japan", I say: what the F**K are you talking about!!! The 360 is not seeing its price cut!!! They' re just releasing the core package wich wasn't avalaible there & as everyone knows, the core 360 is cheaper!!! Again, NO PRICE CUT!!! Spong just like to give huge "twists" (euphemism) to their stories...

so they should just give up?

I think they are talking the **CK about this.

To buy an XBox in Japan you currently have to pay ¥X.

Soon you will be able to get one for ¥Y.

Y<X.

Ergo, you will be able to buy an Xbox 360 for less than you used to have to pay.

It's not that hard to understand.

Don't be ridiculous. Of course they should not give up. Microsft has stifled innovation and enforced a harmful monopoly on computing all around the world, not just in the Americas and Europe. It has a god given right to employ the same stultifying tactics on computer gaming globally. There's no reason why the Japanese should get away with having freedom of choice and good games. They should have the same tedious corporate drivel that everyone else has. American drivel.

Gobless Murka!

Still, it's not a price cut since it's not the same pack, I call it BS, they are just starting to sell the core pack, that's all, if I were to sell a car for 20000€, then the next day, I come to you & sell you the same car without the tyres, tyres estimated to cost 500€ & sell you the car for 19500€, would you call it a price cut??? You can call a price cut when you're selling the SAME product for less money; here, it's not the case!

I take your point. But selling a car without tires isn't the same as selling a console without a hard drive and wireless controllers.

It's more akin to selling a car without air and leather.

And the bottom line is, people in Japan can now get a 360 for less than they used to have to pay.

And they still won't pay it.

Actually the headline is even more wrong than you supposed.

A more correcter version would read: "Microsoft Seeks to Capitalise on PlayStation 3 Shortage in Japan."

I'd agree with that, galling though it is to accept corrections from someone who uses "more correcter" ;-)

Both the writer of that article and the sub editor will be informed of their error.

*looks sheepish...

I'm afraid I have the soul of an editor...actually I have the souls of 6 editors, they had a special at Wal-Mart. They're small and dingy and not especially useful except as paperweights, which seems oddly appropriate. I even restrained my Colonial impulse to use the letter z.
