Pen Pen is one of the most exciting, innovative and highly original Dreamcast games to be released leading up to Christmas 1999. Already a massive hit in its native Japan; the game is set to rock the U.K. videogame market.

Developed by General Entertainment, the same company who created Sega Rally and Panzer Dragoon, Pen Pen is refreshing, incredibly enjoyable and fun, in both single and multi-player mode. Marvel at Pen Pen’s original gameplay and awesome characters.

Pen Pen’s most notable feature is the clever way in which it structures its races. Each race consists of three different events: belly sliding, swimming, and speed walking. These events are done on separate sections of the course, one after the other, with a brief break in between as your character walks from one event to the next. There’s also an expert-racing mode of sorts in which one of the three events will be repeated over a brand new section of the course. In short, there’s nothing that’s been done like this before in the history of videogaming!

Control during each phase of the race is simple, well implemented, and functional. The swimming and belly-sliding events require you to press the "A" button in order to make your character stroke itself forward. Timing is important, as the key to the greatest speed is to follow the strokes with a long glide, before you press the "A" button again to stroke (similar in style to a breast-stroke).

The game is equipped with an easy to use onscreen display that suggests when you should press and let go of the "A" button. In the speed-walking mode, the player can control the forward movement by utilising the analogue pad. Players can also charge at an opponent by stunning it on the initial strike. Should the player miss, run for cover because pen pen could do the stunning instead!

One of the most entertaining elements about the game is the selection of the humorous and adorable cartoon-like penguins. In Japanese "Pen Pen" stands for ‘Penguin’, however, in Pen Pen, the cute creatures hail from an incredible galaxy of strange and surreal species. Each pen pen overflows with its own unique personality and comes with its won bag of tricks and surprises. The development team has done an excellent job in instilling the characters with the wackiest level animation ever witnessed in a videogame.

Sparky is quite possibly the most adorable pen pen of the triicelon. He effortlessly glides on his belly at perfect speed, and is also pretty good at walking and swimming.
Meanwhile, the shark character is no good at belly sliding, but he can swim the fastest. Each character comes equipped with cute little phrases that they shout out as they pass an opponent.

The cute characters, simple controls, and unique course design add up to a fun experience for young and old alike! Little kids too will no doubt love the antics of the Pen Pens, and will find the controls an addictive and hard to put down. The game also features a four-player split-screen mode for multiplayer mayhem. It’s simply irresistible!

The game comes complete with a wonderful gift system in which your pen pens are awarded with gifts for finishing first on the courses. These gifts come in the form of up to 40 dress-up items that can be worn by your Pen Pen as it races through the surreal courses.
Make no mistake – Pen Pen is going to capture everyone’s imagination this Christmas. Dreamcast will never be the same!
