3dfx Interactive announced today that it is reducing the end-user price of the Voodoo5 5500 graphics accelerator card in time for Christmas. With a cut of £50 from the previous price of £249, the Voodoo5 5500 is now retailing at £199 in all good computer hardware stores. The Apple Macintosh version of the Voodoo5, the VoodooMAC 5500, has also been cut by £50, down to £229.

As well as the Voodoo5 5500, 3dfx has also introduced more competitive pricing on the Voodoo4 range of cards. The single processor, 32Mb board now retails at £129 while its corresponding Apple Macintosh version, the VoodooMAC 4500, is now selling at £159.

Voodoo cards have been constant best sellers in ChartTrack's hardware charts, with the Voodoo5 5500, launched in June this year, selling strongly to the discerning games players. The Voodoo4 and 5 family of products are the only 3D graphics cards on the market to offer true Full-Scene Anti-Aliasing technology (FSAA), as pioneered by 3dfx and are all available in both AGP and PCI versions.

With a cut in price to under £200, the company believes that the card is now a highly attractive seasonal purchase, offering unbeatable features and value for money.

"We have no intention of giving up our number one retail position," said Mandy Bedborough, Vice-President EMEA at 3dfx. "This cut in price reaffirms our strong commitment to the consumer. We want to see Voodoo cards installed in as many homes as possible and it is our firm intention to make leading edge technology more affordable to end-users."

The Voodoo5 5500 AGP/PCI board is a 64Mb, 2D/3D graphics accelerator incorporating two VSA-100 processors. Running at 166 MHz, the card achieves 667 Megapixels per second fill-rate, while its 350MHz RAMDAC supports resolutions up to 2,048 by 1,536 pixels. The 3D core in the Voodoo5 5500 includes support for 3dfx's T-Buffer digital cinematic effects - which include FSAA - plus 32-bit colour rendering, stencil support, DXTC and FXT1 texture compression, and 2Kx2K texture map support.
