ECTS 2000: The Close Combat series has taken you to the beaches at Omaha, the bridges of Operation Market Garden and the Eastern Front. Now Close Combat: Operation Overlord, the fifth game in the award-winning series, takes you back to Normandy, where it all began.
You start the game at 6am on June 6th 1944, when the combined armed forces of Great Britain, France, Canada and the USA launched the greatest amphibious invasion in the history of war. Thinking that the early reports of an invading force at Normandy were merely a diversionary ruse, Hitler held his 21st Panzer Division in reserve... until it was too late. The Allied landings battered Hitler's Atlantic Wall and Europe freed itself of the Third Reich in less than a year. Close Combat: Operation Overlord retells the story of this historic assault from the eyes of the men who fought these brave battles.
Take command of either the defending German armies or the American invading forces. Fighting as the Germans, you must stem the tide of American men and equipment. As the American commander, you will have to drive the Germans from their defensive positions. Whoever you choose to play, the advanced AI ensures your men will have to deal with real combat stresses and their consequences.
Run your men, and they get tired; place their lives in jeopardy, and they cower; waste your men carelessly, and they will run off the battlefield. By the same token, master the lessons of war and soldiers will fight like lions under your command. Have you ever wondered what it takes to get the Congressional Medal of Honour or the Knights Cross? With detailed soldier information, you can track the performance of your troops as they hone their combat skills to a steely edge and earn medals in historic campaigns or those of your own creation.
Close Combat: Operation Overlord is a real-time tactical game where the players' successes and failures will have a direct impact on the overall campaign. The campaign system allows for the movement of multiple battle groups on a strategic map of the peninsula. There is a scenario editor that allows you to create your own operations spanning the entire 25 days of the invasion. Placing any of the 34 battle groups over the 44 maps of the Cotentin Peninsula, you can create campaigns with over 1000 battles. Coupled with the ability to set the strength and location of supply depots and initial supply levels, the combinations are almost endless. Dynamic weather effects can also affect tactics and strategies.
Featuring true line-of-sight and line-of-fire game play, Close Combat: Operation Overlord allows for both direct and indirect fire with the limited ammunition available. Each weapon can be differentiated from its own unique sound effects. This level of detail with the sound effects continues with the characters' voices, all of which are accented for each country's troops.
Close Combat: Operation Overlord has two-player support via serial cable, IPX, dial-up and the Internet. Internet players can use online matchmaking services to find opponents and start games.
Developed by Atomic Games, Close Combat: Operation Overlord is due for release on PC CD-ROM in November 2000. For more information, visit http://www.ssionline.com/cc5/
