The heroism and skills of the world’s firefighters are to form the basis of a stunning new PlayStation 2 action title from Konami of Europe, entitled Firefighter F.D. 18.

Set in a huge city, the game follows firefighter Dean McGregor as he becomes embroiled in a complex mystery involving the random eruption of fires within some of the area’s largest buildings. Also covering the fires is TV news reporter Emilie Arvin, and as the game progresses the unlikely pair finds themselves working side by side as they seek out the perpetrator behind the blazes.

Viewed in the third-person, Firefighter F.D. 18’s intelligent camera system trails McGregor as he enters the burning locations in search of trapped survivors and attempts to put the fires out. Thus, players are introduced to the danger firefighters face every day as chemicals explode, backdrafts show their devastating force and flashovers continually threaten the life of McGregor and those he is attempting to rescue. The game also forces the player to think quickly in hazard-filled situations as he uses hoses, axes and additional equipment to extinguish the fires and clear a path to safety. He is also equipped with a special mobile water unit, allowing him to douse the flames in hard to access areas.

Firefighter F.D. 18 is an original concept, developed by Konami’s KCE TYO (Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo) studio, and continues the publisher’s commitment to promoting new and original game ideas. “Konami has historically been a leader in terms of developing new video game concepts, and Firefighter F.D. 18 continues this,” said Hans-Joachim Amann, Senior European Brand Manager of Konami of Europe.

“The constant and unpredictable threat from the racing fires contributes to the level of tension that runs throughout the game, forcing the player to second-guess where danger lurks. It also forces the player to think laterally as to how to combat blazes and rescue stricken people without endangering themselves. We genuinely feel this is a massive step forward in terms of involving users in the games they play.”

With its astonishing fire effects and interactive 3D locations, Firefighter F.D. 18 is a remarkable take on the action genre. As the flames lick through a series ever more dangerous locations – including tower blocks and a luxury cruiser – the scenario and interaction between McGregor and the TV reporter draw the player into a twisting plot where ultimately the pair must struggle through a devastating inferno as they search for the arsonist behind the city-wide attacks.
