Middlesbrough, Teesside, August 21st, 2000 - Atomic Planet Entertainment Ltd. was unveiled today as a new independent games studio, based in the north east of England. It has been set up by brothers Darren and Jason Falcus following over 12 successful years at the helm of Acclaim Studios Teesside in various guises.
The Falcus' originally founded a studio in Teesside in 1988. It was called Optimus Software Ltd. In 1993, they teamed up with US based Iguana Entertainment, changing their company name to match. The whole of the Iguana group was later snapped up by Acclaim Entertainment in 1995.
The brothers have ambitious plans for the new studio - with a current head count of 10, expected to grow to 30 within a year, and 50+ within 2 years. 'A.P.E. has many attributes which make it stand out from the crowd,' stated Managing Director, Darren Falcus. 'We have a wealth of experience across virtually every games platform, we have worked on many best sellers, we place a strong emphasis on project management and timely delivery, and above all, we know how to run every aspect of a development studio. We have been doing it for almost 13 years, as part of both an independent studio and as part of a large corporation.'
During their time at Acclaim Studios, they, and several of their new staff were involved in many major hits, including the multi-million selling home versions of NBA Jam and NBA Jam TE, Forsaken 64, and most recently Shadow Man.
The split from Acclaim was said to be amicable. 'We felt that we had achieved everything we could within Acclaim, and felt the urge to go back to our roots within an independent development studio,' said Joint MD / Development Director, Jason Falcus. 'We had some fantastic times at Acclaim, and enjoyed many successes. It was a tough decision to leave, and we wish them all the best for the future.'
Atomic Planet Entertainment Ltd. has many skilled staff with experience on most formats including Playstation, PC, Playstation 2, X-Box, N64, and Gameboy. They are currently prototyping some original concepts and are keen to talk to publishers regarding both their original products, and any other development needs.
