Sudden Strike Tournament ends with a bang

2002's UK Champion crowned at weekend's Finals.

The second UK Sudden Strike Championship concluded at the weekend, as UK Champion Gareth Mangnall - AKA Guderian - defended his victory in the previous year's tournament.

The qualifiers took place at the VGA-affiliated LAN centres across the country three weeks ago. Contestants from these games were whittled down to the final rounds that took place on Saturday.

The Sudden Strike finalists met at the Cybernet LAN centre in Halifax, to compete for the only official Sudden Strike crown. Each game took an hour and a half to play, and from these the field was reduced to finalists Richard Kilcline and, somewhat inevitably, reigning champion Guderian.

The battle was tough, but experience and strength shone through. Guderian outflanked Kilcline, dominating in terms of pressure and tactics. Despite competing valiantly, there was little Kilcline could do; Guderian wiped his forces from the map and was declared, once again, the UK Sudden Strike Champion.

The rewards for his endeavours were great: A top-of-the-range PC, worth £1500, plus a load of CDV goodies. Most importantly, Gareth retains the title for another year.

"The Sudden Strike events command a tremendous support," says Leo Zullo, marketing manager, CDV Software Entertainment, "and the day itself proved an unqualified success. CDV's congratulations go out to Gareth and everyone who took part. Thanks once to all who took part again for making the event such a thrilling contest."

The Sudden Strike series of games has sold over 750,000 copies since original launch. The Championship will return again next year - bigger and better than ever.
