Bungie to release editing tools with Myth II: Soulblighter.

CHICAGO—September 16, 1998--—The greatness of a game is dependent on the power of the tools used to build it. The greater a game is, and the more fanatical its fans, the more they long to customize the experience. With this in mind, Bungie Software is happy to announce that Myth II: Soulblighter will include its powerful editing tools in the box when the game ships later this year.

Myth II: Soulblighter is the product of two tools, dubbed Fear and Loathing. Fear is the tag editor, which allows users to manipulate the many cross-platform data files, or tags, that control the characteristics of units, objects, sounds and most other elements in the Myth world. Loathing is the map editor, which unites a user’s map texture with the 3D mesh that makes it into a terrain, and governs the placement of units, sound sources and other game elements on that terrain. Together these tools allow a user to create an entirely new Myth world from scratch, or modify existing Myth levels into bizarre permutations of the originals.

What does this mean? If users want to make all of their warriors run twice as fast or add a dozen more to a level, the modification is simple. If they want all of the dwarves to shoot flaming chickens out of their butts, this also is possible though it takes a bit more work and tweaking (on a whim, one of our level designers did this in about 20 minutes; see our web site). If they want to turn the Myth world into a giant pillowfight that takes place on a zero-gravity spaceship with “In a Gadda da Vida” as the background music, the tools will let users do it, though again requiring a bit more effort and dedication.

These editors will blow the Myth world wide open, and there’s no doubt that creative, amusing, incredible mods will result. Indeed, many excellent maps and mods have already appeared which were made with hacked editors. Fear and Loathing have intuitive interfaces accessible even to novice users which encourage experimentation. Any changes can be saved as plug-ins for Myth II so they can be shared with friends and played with over bungie.net. The tools make Myth II: Soulblighter infinitely replayable, and add enormous value to the product.
