Tuesday 25th February 2014 - London, United Kingdom – Ukie and the TV Coalition, supported by BAFTA, will host a special event with a Senior Government Minister to discuss the games industry tax relief and celebrate the one year anniversary of the introduction of tax reliefs for high-end television.Games trade body Ukie and the TV Coalition, representing organisations across the UK TV sector, announced today that they will be hosting a creative sector tax relief event on Friday 4th April at 9am which will be held at BAFTA. The two organisations have come together to deliver the high level gathering of business leaders and decision makers.
A Senior Government Minister will be attending to discuss games industry tax reliefs and to celebrate the one year anniversary of the introduction of tax reliefs for high-end TV and animation. The event will look in detail at the economic and cultural impact that the credits have had for these sectors a year on.
Ukie CEO Dr Jo Twist said: “We’ve worked very closely with government to help get a tax relief scheme introduced for UK games businesses and are delighted to host an event to discuss this hugely important tax relief, alongside our partners in the TV and animation industries. We’re very much looking forward to having the opportunity for the games sector to discuss the relief with the Government and to hearing some of the positive stories that the TV and animation sectors have to tell one year on from the introduction of their reliefs.”
TV Coalition Chair and Chief Executive of Pact John McVay said: “Two years ago, the TV industry made clear that we wanted to keep the best British productions the UK, and wanted to bring more work to our shores. One year after the television tax relief was introduced, it’s clear that it is delivering a huge boost to the UK’s high end TV sector. I am delighted to see that so many productions have used the tax credit, and I look forward to seeing many more productions filmed in the UK on our screens.”
The event will also see presentations from Ian Livingstone CBE, Vice Chair of Ukie, and Iain Smith OBE, Chair of the British Film Commission and producer of 24: Live Another Day starring Kiefer Sutherland, which is currently shooting in the UK.
Tax reliefs for games, high-end TV and animation were announced by Chancellor George Osborne in the 2012 Budget. The High-end TV and animation reliefs have now been in place for a year, and have already had a major impact. Games tax relief is awaiting state aid approval from the European Commission.
The event is open to all games, TV and animation businesses but places are limited. Invitations will be sent out tomorrow morning, and booking will be open from 9.30am at this
address.
