April 20th 2000: Paul and Oliver Collyer from Sports Interactive, the guys responsible for creating the Championship Manager range of games, were proud to accept an award last night from the European Leisure Software Publishers
Association.
ELSPA hosted the first ever Volume Sales Awards ceremony at the Park Lane Hilton to recognise and reward those games that have achieved sales of over 100,000
units according to ChartTrack. The awards were conceived to mirror those given in the music industry where artists hope to gain enough sales to be awarded the ultimate accolade of a platinum disc, indicating sales of over 300,000 albums.
Championship Manager: Season 99/00 easily fulfilled the criteria to be awarded a silver award. Oliver Collyer stepped up to collect the award from Roger Bennett of ELSPA and Dorian Bloch of ChartTrack.
"This is so cool!" commented Oliver Collyer, joint Managing Director of Sports Interactive. "We are thrilled that so many people enjoy playing Championship Manager as much as we enjoy making it. To have a formal recognition of how well
the game has sold is very rewarding. We're especially pleased that we got to collect the award ourselves and hope that more games developers will have the opportunity to do this in the future."
Paul Collyer, Oliver's brother and business partner added, "We would like to dedicate this award to all of the Championship Manager widows out there. We thank you for your patience and understanding on behalf of your menfolk."
Championship Manager: Season 99/00 has in fact sold 172,245 units so far since it's launch in December (ChartTrack figures only) and continues to achieve high chart positions. Since the first game's release in 1992, Championship Manager titles have sold in excess of 1,500,000 copies world-wide.
