Next-generation console owners will be in for the flight and fight of their lives, when Virgin Interactive releases Maelstrom, a stunning combination of first-person shooter and space combat this winter.
Scheduled for release Christmas 2001 for PlayStation 2, and later on other next-gen consoles in 2002. Maelstrom will be the first title to hail from Virgin's revamped internal development department.
In Maelstrom, players join one of two warring pirate bands battling for control of deep space. Initially, players dogfight around massive convoys of dreadnoughts in their own combat fighters. As security and defences are breached players embark upon a daring internal raid aboard the vessels. Once on board, players battle on the ground against the enemy troops. The object of each attack is to retrieve valuable booty - with each mission increasing in difficulty and ferocity and players notoriety increasing with each successful raid!
As player’s notoriety increases they will meet and recruit pirates each with a specialist skill. These include a computer hacker, an explosive expert and an assassin. Specialist pirates accompany players throughout subsequent missions, as teamwork becomes increasingly important.
Maelstrom boasts an amazing single-player plot spread across 20 missions, scripted by Judge Dredd writer Robbie Morrison. Additional multiplayer maps offer unlimited replay value - via a split-screen mode on PlayStation 2 and online for Xbox.
The characters which inhabit Maelstrom's uniquely styled world have been designed and created by Batman and Judge Dredd artist, Jim Murray. All the pirate characters, and their robot adversaries are modelled and animated to the very highest level of detail, bringing to life the comic-book style and exuberance of this original concept.. The next generation of Epic’s Unreal Tournament engine, “Unreal Warfare”, powers the visuals, offering a graphical tour-de-force throughout.
Maelstrom combines two of the most popular gameplay genres to create one trailblazing title. The space combat sections will see the player engaging in epic and intense, all-action battles. However, once aboard players will have to adopt stealth and guile to outwit superior AI in frenetic, high-octane action.
