Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis is the hotly tipped and massively detailed Cold War tactical combat action title from Prague-based developers Bohemia Interactive Studio.
Codemasters is scheduling Operation Flashpoint for a major launch in Quarter 1, 2001 and promises the finest example of a squad-based combat game to date, providing PC gamers with an immersive playing experience and a gripping and twisting plot.
Offering players command and control of squads, with up to 12 soldiers (from over 30 different types of infantry solider) in each, and massive open environments, Operation Flashpoint is already a major talking point on leading gaming web sites.
Much in demand, thanks to its intriguing Cold War theme, the game trounces its competitors by enabling players to jump in and take control any of the mobile, armoured, air or water-based military and civilian vehicles featured in the game’s scenarios.
Gameplay offers a progressive mission based Campaign, a full mission editor and an engaging multi-player combat mode.
Visually striking, the advanced character models and animation techniques have been designed and developed in Bohemia Interactive Studio’s dedicated motion capture and animation studio. Similarly, Operation Flashpoint’s recreation of the armed vehicles featured is the most authentic seen in an action title.
Offering first and third-person views, the intricately detailed 3D environments are complete with real time lighting, weather and even an accurate constellation in the night sky for lost troops to navigate by.
The scenario sets the action in the midst of the Cold War, just as Gorbachev is elected to power. However, some resistance Soviet groups are opposed to the new policies of glasnost and perestroika and refuse to serve the new regime in Moscow.
One such group has taken control of an island community, and is using it as an armed stronghold for the old order. A dangerous situation: its neighbouring island is an independent republic, and – most importantly – another nearby island serves as a military base for NATO.
The new Soviet powers, for the time unable to take action against the resistance, have called upon NATO to act as a peacekeeping force. Operation Flashpoint, the game, begins with the player joining the first mission against the resistance taking the role of a basic NATO private.
The overall campaign objective is to execute peacekeeping missions in this political and military flashpoint. Successful missions will improve the player’s rank through to colonel.
As missions progress, the way the player handles each mission in certain locations, be it destructive or co-operative, will affect future the missions – especially if returning to a previously visited location.
Providing limitless longevity, Operation Flashpoint also boasts a fully featured mission editor that enables players to create virtually any combat situation and mission or even completely new campaigns. Intuative and easy to use, player designed missions are stored as small files that can be exchanged easily over the Internet to other players.
“Operation Flashpoint is the latest in the line of excellent acquisitions for Codemasters,” says Dean Trotman, Codemasters’ Acquisitions Executive. “As we look to expand our quality portfolio, our goal is to establish long-term relationships with many of the talented external development teams that seek the creative input, commitment, and the security necessary to achieve mass-market publishing success.”
Marek Spanel, Managing Director of Bohemia Interactive Studio, comments: “Codemasters sets very high standards for the games it acquires. It is recognised as publishing only the best across the genres. Therefore, we are very proud to have Operation Flashpoint included as a priority game in Codemasters international portfolio for 2001. With Codemasters’ expertise in marketing and publishing, I am confident Operation Flashpoint’s launch will be a major PC publishing event.”
Comments Mike Hayes, Codemasters’ Marketing Director: “Bohemia Interactive Studio has developed a very special title, which leaps so far ahead of the projected evolution of the genre that it practically starts a whole fresh game category. Operation Flashpoint has far more mass appeal and realism than anything the market’s seen before. “Operation Flashpoint is richly detailed and crammed with authentic content that delivers an immersive experience played over impressive graphic environments. With its interlinked dynamic scenarios, striking music score and evolving plotlines, we’re making Operation Flashpoint our first key PC launch of 2001.”
