Sony Dropping Component for PS3 - UPDATE
***UPDATE***

Sony has issued a statement regarding this matter:

"The new CECH-3000 series PS3 requires HDMI only for BD movie output in HD, in compliance with AACS standards.

"PS3 continues to support component output for HD gaming and streaming content."

***END UPDATE***

According to a rumour via a GameStop memo, the new "replacement model for the 160GB Playstation 3" aka "The new 'K' chassis" will drop a component connection. This means it's HDMI only for HD.

Kotaku says that, "All future models of the PS3, the memo continues, will require an HDMI cable for high definition output. Previous models will not be updated to require HDMI for high definition viewing."

GameStop doesn't seem too miffed, stating that this push to HDMI will "also help you drive add-on sales."

But maybe this is not to due with pushing over-priced HDMI cables... MCV suggests, "AACS content protection system, which governs many things including copy protection systems on Blu-ray discs."
