A new(ish) Inside Xbox video describing how to set up Kinect makes it very, very clear that if you've got an untidy floor, poor lighting and not much space, well, you're going to have problems. So, tidy your damned room.

Potential new Kinect game idea. 'Kinect Kleaning'. You play in an untidy room. You get points for cleaning certain things. You get combo bonuses etc.
