Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has announced on its PlayStation Blog that adhocParty for PlayStation Portable is coming soon. The service allows PSP multiplayer games that only allow ad-hoc capability to be played over a wireless Internet connection, using a PlayStation 3 as a bridge.
Before, unless a PSP game specifically allowed online play (of which such titles are few and far between), two or more players had to be in close proximity in order to enjoy multiplayer games. With a dearth of visible PSPs in the wild, it's a godsend to some to be able to finally connect online and enjoy the full potential of games such as Monster Hunter.
adhocParty organises your wireless play into user-created 'houses' (rooms) in lobbies situated on 'worlds' (servers, we imagine). Each world contains 64 lobbies and up to 32 players can join each lobby in the form of an avatar. Users creating their own house are hosts of the current adhoc and can decide on topics of chat and avatars who attempt to enter.
A full list of compatible games is yet to be released, but it includes Gran Turismo, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, Dissidia Final Fantasy and Resistance: Retribution. We can only hope for Phantasy Star Portable to be added to that list too, as we love ourselves some of that.
The application is coming 'soon', with no confirmed release date as of yet, but perhaps we might see it in Thursday's PlayStation Store update. There is one caveat however – to use adhocParty, your PlayStation 3 must be using a wired Internet connection, as your PSP will be using the wireless channel by connecting to it.
