For those of you yet to experience the intense jungle warfare of the Vietcong games, Purple Haze provides an incentive to do so via a rather attractive bundle. In the usual fashion, the title offers a compilation of the original Vietcong, originally released in April 2003, alongside its brand spanking new expansion pack, Fist Alpha.

The most celebrated of 'Nam-based adventures, Vietcong is a first-person shooter that plunges you deep into the inhospitable jungles of Vietnam and casts you as the leader of a team of US Special Forces. In similar vein to the likes of Rainbow Six, the gameplay is squad-based, meaning that you must take charge of your team and implement a fair amount of strategy throughout each mission.

Set across a respectable 20 missions, you're charged with overcoming dozens of formidable obstacles and employing a considerable amount of stealth in order to progress through the game. Staying faithful to the real-life action of the famous conflict, the game soon has you learning to keep a low profile, making use of shadows and developing a sharp eye for booby traps.

Fist Alpha follows it up in the usual way, providing a host of new additions and features to add more life to the proceedings. There are seven unique single-player missions, as well as an additional eight all-new multiplayer maps, all including the game's popular co-op mode. As well as this, the expansion pack introduces six new weapons to the fray, including bayonets and machetes, which heighten the hand-to-hand combat element of the game, and even heavier artillery filling the smoky skies with a shower of shells on both the US and NVA alike. You will also feel the wrath of the likes of B52 Bombers, F-105 Thunderchiefs and F4 Phantom Fighters as they continue their reign of terror in the skies. << less
