Ladies and Gentlemen, in the red corner we have the respected developer and publisher, Midway, and the blue corner, Nintendos Game Boy Advance. Lets get ready to rumble as Round 2 of the popular boxing game is miniaturised and made portable. If you are an early advocate of Nintendos new technology and beat-em-ups do it for you, Ready 2 Rumble Round 2 is the first fighting game for the Advance.
The main difference in this version of Ready 2 Rumble is the conversion from 3D to 2D. Even though the Advance is an amazing piece of kit, it lacks polygon pushing power. This does not badly affect the gameplay, as most of the fights are won on landing punches and not buzzing around the ring. The background effect is good, the ring is displayed in psuedo-3D and spins around the characters as you move.
As with nearly all fighting games, the aim of the game is to be the last man standing. The way to do this is to carefully balance your attacks with blocking. Knowing when and where to attack is the way to connect and that is the path to victory. If you land a succession of punches, your rumble meter starts to build up. If you fill your rumble gauge, you can unleash the devastating rumble combo that will surely take out your opponent. If your rumble meter is charged high enough, you can even knock your opponent out of the ring.
Ready 2 Rumble is a good portable version of the series, but ultimately the limited capabilities of the Advance let it down. The gameplay is adequate, but nothing to get excited about. Its sad that a two-player link-up function was not included, as most fighting games are nowhere near as much fun in the single-player mode.
