Summary

Batman was once a phenomenally successful franchise during the days of its TV series, and perhaps into the first and second instalments on the big screen. But Batman became quickly over marketed and popularity plunged. The animated series, however, is still running strong, and supporting this statement is the release of the Game Boy incarnation of the franchise, Batman of the Future: Return of the Joker.

Right from the off, older players within the industry will recognise the ‘Streets of Rage’ style gameplay. After taking control of super hero Batman, you will come across a number of thug-infested scrolling levels. Initially you will be armed only with your fists, but as you progress, you will soon come across some useful and devastating weapons, such as the highly illegal nun-chucks that can be added to your bat suit. In true Streets of Rage fashion, you have to defeat each bad guy in an area before getting a signal telling you to proceed, and in the same way, and end-of-level boss awaits you at the end.

Although Batman shows nothing new in terms of gameplay, to be able to play such a game on a ten-year-old handheld is a good thing, and for that reason alone, is worth a look.
