Xbox 2 and Xenon names debunked. The new Microsoft console is called…

Well click the story. What are you waiting for?

The Xbox 360. At least according to the Internet, the globally linked computer network that enables disenfranchised males to enjoy unattainable female forms and make up videogame rumours.

SPOnG had heard the Xbox 360 tag banded about for some time now and we believe that the wider publicising of it stems from a NDA-laden briefing to press partners that took place in Seattle a little over two weeks ago.

The news does beg one important question however. What happened to Xboxes 2 through 359?

As ever, final word will be from Microsoft. We'll keep you updated.

If you divide 360 by 3 you get 120.
Which if you invert you get 21. Massive conspiracy.

Nintendo 21, Xbox 360, Playstation 3

Spong...Why do u guys always shoot yourself in the foot ? An Xbox rep announced yesterday that the new name is officially called Xenon. It was all over your competitor Gamespot and other link's at Gametab. So how did you blow this one ?

Spong seem to have this amazing talent for throwing shi*t at the 'net and then seeing what sticks.

Whether this is one of those attempts, we shall see.

However, what is funny is that Spong scooped a forthcoming Sony title recently WAY before anyone else - except they got the name slightly wrong... - but have since failed to realise that they did. So they have missed an opportunity to pat themselves on the back.

Oh well...

Does the name represent their attempt to "cover all angles" of home entertainment?

Maybe they just wanted to wait and let you do it.

But you do seem to be missing the point, they aren't reporting Xbox 360 as the new official name, they are reporting that it's the latest rumour. The clue, for those of you to stupid and self-satisfied to spot it first time around was in the line "The Xbox 360. At least according to the Internet..."

If you could see past your own smug arrogance, you'd realise that SPOnG was the first to confirm the Xenon name... http://news.spong.com/x?art=7715

That picture looks like that horrible 3G Nokia phone.

Why do people really think MS would produce a beautiful console? Playstations have always been ugly, as have PCs...

Apparantly some Internet Survey skanks conducted a survey last June, asking which sounded "most next-gen": N5, Xbox 360 or PS3.

The concern is that the general public may think PS3 sounds more next-gen than XB2... ... because "3" is bigger than "2". Dumb? Well so is Joe Bloggs.

Oi! I had one of them phones until three days ago. Now I have a really beautiful Samsung D500 slide phone.

The 7600 was a decent phone, but mine was on Three - and they suck ass.

I'm a bit confused by this comment. What do Playstations and/or PCs have to do with Microsoft?

I know the PlayStation has never looked great, but PS2 looks better than Xbox - particularly the new slim PS2. And GameCube does too. Xbox reminds me of nothing more than an overstuffed suitcase. It's huge, but still looks like it's bulging at the seams.

I personally like the PSX design - but then it looks like it was designed by Apple, and I'm a total Mac-whore.

Maybe the same thing that happened to Windowses 99 through 1999?

Or Microsoft Words 7 through 94.

I actually still am on 3; the service is improving, especially with the use of O2's network for the non-3G areas.

And yes, the PSX was beautiful; but the original PS1 (not the small, squashed looking one) and the first run of PS2s were horrible little things.

Then again, look at how consoles have looked: the NES and Master System were ugly, the SNES was OK, the Megadrive was kinda pretty, the Saturn and PS1 sure weren't, the N64 looked silly, the Dreamcast like a portaloo (and the Jaguar too...), the Cube looks like a makeup storage device, the Xbox is a heap, and the PS2 was famously called "an industrial fan block" in Edge by some top designers.

Hopes of ever seeing a nice looking console (bar the PSX and Megadrive) are pretty slim...
