Sega of Japan has released a bunch of screens and info taken from Virtua Fighter Cyber Generation, one of its most controversial games in development right now.
As you may be aware, the game started life when AM2 chief Yu Suzuki mentioned that an RPG - which would be exclusive to GameCube - was in development and was based on the VF franchise, still one of the biggest gaming brands in Japan.
Reports - since proven inaccurate - detailed the game world as being populated by super-deformed, big-headed versions of the Virtua Fighter roster, in an all-new storyline, taking in elements of other VF stories from selected works of fiction.
When the game was shown, it’s fair to say that expectations were not met. Sega explained that the game would be aimed at younger gamers, perhaps those not exposed to the hardcore world of Virtua Fighter. Cyber Generation will also merely make reference to VF, as opposed to being solely about it.
One of the first screenshots released from the game gained fame in Internet circles after the slightest PhotoShop touch-up. It was of the lead character which simple read “WTF?” as a caption, perfectly summing up the reaction of Sega and VF fans around the world.
However, although the game may have disappointed when unveiled, the eternally optimistic Sega fanbase remains hopeful, following some positive comments from Sega officials. The Virtua Fighter-ness of Cyber Generation has been underlined, and fans of the seminal 3D fighting series will find something to cling to, news that was received well.
So to the point at hand, and the screenshots released overnight in Japan. The reaction of most is that the game looks suspiciously like Phantasy Star Online; not a bad thing, though perhaps not the sprawling cyber city of free-for-all violence that had been hoped for.
Expect updates on everything Sega, right here.
