3dfx left last week's ECTS (Olympia, September 3rd to 5th) with more than just happy memories of a successful show, as the firm also picked up two prestigious awards for its best-selling Voodoo5 hardware range.

The two awards, both for 'Best PC Hardware' were presented by the show's organisers and by the influential gaming website Eurogamer.

"The Voodoo5 architecture delivers simply the best visual quality, across more titles, at the highest frame rates available," says Scott Sellers, co-founder and chief technology officer at 3dfx Interactive. "Users who have experienced the industry's first hardware-based full-scene anti-aliasing capability no longer will accept the jagged edges and 'pixel popping' found on many of our competitors' products. With the industry's only hardware anti-aliasing solution and best game compatibility hands down, it's only natural that our European customers would select our products as 'best of show'."

The ECTS show awards (known unofficially as 'Stars'), were presented at 3pm on Monday September 4th by the presenters of the Channel 4 computer and video games show, Bits. The award for Best PC Hardware, which was voted for by more than 800 visitors to the show's website, placed 3dfx's Voodoo5 5500 above all of its competitors.

The Eurogamer award, which was chosen by the site's journalists and presented on the day following the show, went to 3dfx's forthcoming Voodoo5 6000, which the site described as "the stretched limousine of graphics cards."

"With both NVIDIA and 3dfx showing blindingly fast new products, this was a tough decision to make, but in the end it was 3dfx that won. The Voodoo 5 6000 should reclaim the speed crown for 3dfx," said John Bye, editor in chief for Eurogamer.net "When released next month it should be one of the fastest graphics cards on the planet, and its full-scene anti-aliasing capabilities means that it should also have the best image quality."

The Voodoo5 5500 is currently available from leading retailers at a recommended retail price of UKP249 (inc. VAT), while the Voodoo5 6000 is expected to ship in the autumn - the pricing for this product is yet to be announced.
