Miyamoto to Resign?

Miyamoto to Resign?
As the pre-E3 mania continues to swell, there have been some extremely interesting rumours filtering down through the ranks. Speaking to a representative at E3 today, three separate sources have all implied that Shigeru Miyamoto - Nintendo's masterful video-game overlord - is expected to hand in his resignation at some point during this week's conference.

This would be big news. Miyamoto has been the key figure at Nintendo for over 20 years and has been responsible for many of the world's most beloved video games, including Mario, Donkey Kong and Zelda. It is difficult to conceive why this decision might have been made - perhaps Mr. Miyamoto is simply yearning for his pipe, slippers and a packet of Werther's Originals.

As yet, this is unconfirmed. If there are any official announcements over the next week, you can be sure to read them here first. Conversely, if Miyamoto is definitely staying put, we'll be the first to dispel the myth. Stay tuned.

It will be a sad day, but if anyone deserves some feet-up time it's gotta be Shiggz.

Although I would be surprised if there isn't some kind of huge swansong announcement before he potters off into the sunset...

No way will he resign. A retirement is a possibility but he's never going to work for another company. That's just not done in Japan.

Not really. Tetsuya Mizuguchi resigned from Sega not long ago and wants to set up his own studio. What's not to say Miyamoto feels like he isn't valued, what with his games being endlessly recycled rather than them giving him much new stuff to do?

If he does go, it'll be interesting to see how much he takes with him.

Possibly the only figure-head in the game industry that actually does something.

It would be a sad day for science indeed. As fans of video games, we should all be hoping this is not true. As the market stands, it needs fresh ideas from people like him in order to survive the next ten years.

Noone has done it better with as much passion.
