Rockstar on Racist Haitian Claims
We brought you news two weeks ago that told of how Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto: Vice City had managed to greatly irritate yet another group of people, the Haitians.

Haitian pressure groups complained that the game portrayed them as drug traffickers and gangsters, and expressed great displeasure.

Now, it’s widely acknowledged that Haiti is one of the most dangerous places on earth. Wracked by internal power struggles and described by the CIA as being “…a major Caribbean trans-shipment point for cocaine en route to the US and Europe; substantial money-laundering activity; Colombian narcotics traffickers favour Haiti for illicit financial transactions; pervasive corruption.”

However, a line in a videogame that goes, "I hate these Haitians, I'm gonna kill me a Haitian", seems to be causing the most offence.

Following a protest in New York against Vice City this week, Rockstar made the following comments in an attempt to play down the latest scandal to hit the game. “We empathise with the concerns of the Haitian community and we are giving serious consideration to them. Some statements made by fictional characters in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City have been taken out of context. There was no intention to offend any ethnic group and we take these claims very seriously.”

It’s hardly an apology, but Rockstar has stated that it will remove the offending phrases from future releases.

Expect all juicy Grand Theft Auto-related news right here, as it breaks.
