Under the strictest embargo, Microsoft recently showed its Media2Go handheld multimedia player to assembled technology journalists in London.
The player, slightly bigger than a Walkman of old, is a multimedia player that plays video and music, with the possible capacity for games, downloaded through high-speed Internet connections. Although at the time nothing was mentioned regarding Xbox compatibility, the prospect of delivering licensed content to the living room, and give the consumer the ability to play it on the go, must be almost irresistible to Microsoft.
Over the weekend, speculation has pointed at an upgrade to Xbox Live that will incorporate media delivery, and is expected to include the full debut of the Media2Go player.
You may remember that we exclusively brought the world news of the existence of Microsoft’s Media2Go system several months ago, and even then speculation was rife that the project, arguably the Golden Fleece of home entertainment, would make its way to the firm’s living room console.
Sony has already confirmed that this is exactly the future it envisages for the PlayStation brand, though strangely Microsoft always denied that it had an eye on content delivery as a revenue source for Xbox.
“At the appropriate time - which I will not identify today - we're going to bring out a second-generation of the console. We're going to continue to work hard to take market share,” said Xbox chief Steve Ballmer in a recent interview.
We will of course monitor this closely and bring you updates as we get them.
