Iwata: No Dark Future for Nintendo
The old saw doing the rounds of the games industry as it desperately clings to the idea that three closed format consoles provide an actual free market is that, "You can't underestimate Nintendo". Even CEO Satoru Iwata is clinging to this hope.

With the Wii U slipping out of focus as both the PS4 and Xbox One hove into view with their similarities glaring, Iwata faced investors recently to explain that:

"If you believe that there is no possibility of Nintendo’s results improving, then you would be right about it being necessary to review the structure of the workforce and the company itself to match the scale of the business.

"However, I believe that there are upward and downward swings in the video game business, that Nintendo has the potential to be a larger-scale business, and that in order to achieve that potential, good developers, localization capability and the ability to sell overseas are necessary.

"We need a company with a lot of muscle, but a company that also has no excess fat – one that makes smart spending decisions. Restructuring the workforce is not the first option we consider even when cost cutting is required. I would like you to understand that this is because we do not see a dark future for Nintendo."

We read this as, "We're going to be cutting staff soon". What do you reckon, can you under-estimate Nintendo? Tell us in the comments below or on Facebook or even over on the Forum.

To be honest, the more information I hear about "next-gen" PS4 and XBone, the more interested I become in Wii U.

So far on "next-gen" I feel like I am seeing a lot of multiplatform, incrementally improved, games. Same on Wii U. However, Wii U also has (the prospect of) Nintendo's first party titles, and it's half the price.
