PS3 Firmware 4.45 Pulled After Update Bricks Consoles
Sony has rolled out the latest PlayStation 3 system firmware - version 4.45 - but you might want to hold off on updating your console right now. According to overnight reports, the new software has the ability to completely brick your hardware.

A 79-page thread on Sony's official PlayStation support forums suggests that the firmware is adversely affecting a hell of a lot of consoles out there, in many cases effectively killing them dead. The issues seem to be largely be affecting PS3s with large self-installed hard drives of 500GB and higher.

Sony has yet to release a formal statement on the matter, but on Twitter the company did announce that it has "temporarily taken 4.45 offline and are investigating" the issues.

You're not missing much by not installing the firmware anyway - apparently the update adds the ability to turn Trophy notifications off, as well as "system stability." Ha.
