What a difference a generation makes. Sony is committed to launching the PlayStation 4 in the US and, interestingly, Europe this holiday season - but for Japan, the company is still undecided as to whether the console will launch in 2013.There were rumours some months ago that Europe had become a key territory for Sony in the upcoming next-generation console war with Microsoft, and that seems to be the case. Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has said that only the US and Europe are confirmed to be supplied with consoles before 2014. For other territories, it depends on a number of factors.
"This E3 we confirmed that in the US and Europe we will be launching this holiday with the $399 (£349) price point," Yoshida said in an interview with
CVG.
"But it's not like we are not launching in other territories - we are waiting to get more information about manufacturing quantities and demand in each market so that we are able to decide where and when outside of the US and Europe.
"Europe is a hugely important market and we do hear on Twitter that lots of people who are unhappy and say, 'why do US consumers get this on PS Plus and not in Europe?' And things like that all the time. So it's all relative, right? They see the other territories all the time. Now it's even easier to see what's available in other territories because of the internet."
It's probably a good move, given that console success in Japan is all but guaranteed for Sony. Microsoft has really had a clear success with Xbox in the UK and the US, two countries in which Sony hopes to tackle its competitor head-on in.
