Exclusive: New Speedball Details Revealed!
We have learned that Bitmap Brothers upcoming Speedball Arena is set to fulfil your every desire! At last night’s party to mark the launch of Metal Gear Solid 2: The Sons of Liberty, the Bitmap’s lead game designer Ed Bartlett let us in on some of the game’s finer points.

For those unlucky enough to never have played a Speedball game, allow us to fill you in. Released primarily for the Amiga, Speedball was a futurisic football-cum-hockey-cum Rollerball game in which one team had to score into its opponent’s goal by any means necessary. Fighting, cheating and bribing the referee were all highly encouraged.

Speedball Arena will essentially be more of the same, but rendered in glorious 3D and with all the attributes of being housed on a modern games platform. SBA will be released for PC, Xbox and PlayStation 2 and its main objective is to become a huge online phenomena.

The game will see the player able to choose to play as a single player as part of a clan-based team, or control the whole team as if in single-player mode. The multiplayer engine will be flexible enough to cope with every single nuance of play imaginable, something that the Bitmaps are keen to highlight.

There are currently fourteen publishers vying for the rights for the game. It would seem that Speedball’s enduring appeal has been noticed by some of the world’s biggest gaming companies.

The game will be presented in a flexible manner, with a full range of camera angles available. You can choose to play from a third-person over the shoulder view, a first-person view, or opt to control the action from the classic top-down view.

SBA will be a cross-platform online title that, if Bitmap Brothers’ ambitions are realised, will see Xbox and PC gamers pitted against PlayStation 2 owners.
