Nintendo Profits Despite Worsening Wii U Sales

Nintendo might have been struggling to sell the Wii U to gamers, but it has still made a profit over the course of its financial year. The latest figures show that, despite the company performing worse than it did last year, it remains 7 billion yen in the black.

The reason for this is, reportedly, entirely down to currency exchange gains. Had this not been the case, it is likely that Nintendo would have suffered its second ever annual loss (and the second in a row, to boot).

Nintendo initially expected to sell 5.5 million Wii U consoles, before cutting that number down to 4 million in January. It actually managed to sell 3.5 million units. 13.42 million Wii U games have been sold worldwide since launch.

While the 3DS is picking up some slack in Japan, where it has become "the leading platform," the handheld has still "not generated sufficient sales momentum" in North America and Europe. Nintendo's 3DS marketing push for the UK this year seems to be an indication that the company wants to resolve that.
