Miyamoto Sees 'Tremendous Possibilities' With Wii U Online
While Microsoft and Sony have been quick to embrace the online space, Nintendo has maintained a relatively conservative stance for the past generation. But now, game producer Shigeru Miyamoto has said that the time is now for the company to explore the "tremendous possibilities" in online functionality.

Explaining to the New York Times why past consoles haven't focused so much on networked play, Miyamoto said, "for many years doing so would have limited the size of the audience that could enjoy those features. But certainly now we see that so many people are connected to the Internet. It opens up a tremendous amount of possibilities."

The Wii U can connect to the internet easily, with a tablet browser featured with the console's GamePad and the innovative social network service known as Miiverse. Using these, as well as traditional features such as online play, Miyamoto sees great potential.

"We really view it as being the ideal device that families are going to want to have connected to that screen in the living room that everyone is going to gather around and watch.

He adds that he's not extremely concerned about the Wii U's performance for the short-term, suggesting that things will likely pick up in the months to come. "Certainly in the short term I would want to see it performing with probably a little more momentum. I think in the long term I’m not at a point where I’m concerned yet."

Recently, Miyamoto told TIME that he would ideally have liked to see Pikmin 3 release with the Wii U's launch.
