Hirai on PS4 Launch: Why Release Before Our Competitors?
Sony CEO Kaz Hirai has suggested that the next-generation PlayStation won't be coming out before Microsoft's competing Xbox console.

During an interview with the Times, Hirai said, "Why go first when your competitors can look at your specifications and come up with something better," suggesting that releasing the next PlayStation ahead of Microsoft would give its competitor an unnecessary advantage.

The rumour mill surrounding the release of the next PlayStation points to two windows - either close to Microsoft's supposed late 2013 launch of its Xbox 360 successor, or early 2014. Sources within Sony have already said that it would be disastrous for Sony to give its bitter rival another long headstart.

Perhaps there's reason for both the rumour and Hirai's comments to be true - for the next PlayStation to release after the next Xbox, but not too long as to lose significant ground. With Hirai's corporation on the back foot in the West, however, that may be a bit os a risky strategy.

that makes no sense. The Xbox won't get a sudden redesign if they see the PS4 specs.

Not a redesign, but maybe they'd up the spec of the GPU or add some RAM or something. These are design changes that can be made late in the day without affecting any of the launch software, but still allowing them to anounce higher specs and give developers more room in the future.
