Good News for Games: £17,000 Raised for Charity

50 representatives from across the video games industry run for charity

This one probably won't get a mention in The Daily Mail or any august psychology journal but that fact is that 50 people who spend most of their lives with video games managed to raise £17,000 running 10k in fancy dress and bad weather for a charity that benefits disabled children.

This, you see, is a big story. It not only illustrates what the video games industry in the UK can and does achieve, it also highlights much of the pseudo-scientific nonsense spouted regarding the effects of video gaming.

The fact is that, "On Sunday 8th July more than 50 representatives from across the video games industry out of a team 70 braved the British 10K run and the great British weather to raise money for video game charity SpecialEffect.

"The runners, including journalists, developers, publishers, games industry service companies, marketing specialists and PR representatives gathered for the 9:30am start.

"Among the 25,000 entrants, the majority of whom were clad in the standard issue black corporate shirt, the group cut a rebellious dash with game-themed costumes such as Sonic andPac-Man, Nathan Drake and Steve from Minecraft, Blanka from Street Fighter 2 and the Zombie from Plants Vs Zombies joining dozens of bright blue SpecialEffect running tops."

Together they have so far raised more than £17,000 for SpecialEffect, the UK national charity dedicated to making gaming accessible for people with disabilities.

The London course ran from Hyde Park Corner and continued along the Victoria Embankment before finishing up at a rain-soaked Whitehall.

Organisations represented included SplashDamage, Microsoft Studios/ XBox, Rocksteady Studios,Codemasters, Voltage PR, PopCap, First Touch Games, Mastertronic, UKIE, Eurogamer,Namco Bandai, Lunch PR, Future Publishing, NcSoft, Audiomotion, Midlifegamer.net,Gamejar, Altered Gene Studios and The Independent.

SpecialEffectplans to go even bigger at next year’s race and reach 100 runners. You can still donate to this year’s cause via JustGiving at www.justgiving.com/angrybirdpaynes, find the SpecialEffect page on Facebook, or follow their progress on Twitter @SpecialEffect
