Nintendo to Combat Rudeness in the MiiVerse

Nintendo will combat grown up behaviour with a large, slow stick.

Nintendo is talking a hugely interesting approach to combating people using language and images that might appear to offend some people in the new Miiverse social network for its upcoming Wii U game console. Human beings at Ninty will read posts and look at images... delaying actual communications by 30 minutes or more.

Nintendo’s chief executive, Satoru Iwata outlined what the LA Times is calling Nintendo's "three-prong approach to combat misbehavior."

Content filtering done via software to make sure that words like "Shit", "Fuck", "American teenager", "Ballstwat", "Shaftycock" and "Fanny batter" are scanned and removed. Words like "Feck", "Sh1t", "Bngger", "Cumt" and "Largetwattedpoophole" with their strange spelling make another layer of protection necessary.

This comes down to "human resources". According to the LAT "Nintendo plans to hire people to monitor content on Miiverse."

Yes, seriously.

"The filtering will be done before the posts are published, Iwata said. With software, that can take a few seconds. But humans need a lot more time to manually sift through content.

"As a result, there will probably be a delay between the time a user creates a post and when it appears in the Miiverse feed. How long depends on how many posts are created and how many people Nintendo has to do the work."
