PlayStation 3 Turns Five in Europe Today
The PlayStation 3 is five years old in the UK. Happy birthday! Sony Computer Entertainment Europe is likely having some cake right now, but otherwise it's being relatively quiet about the console's milestone. Shout it loud and proud, guys. It's halfway through its 10-year lifespan, fer Chrissakes!

Sony's powerhouse was launched in the UK on Friday, March 23rd 2007 with a hefty £425 price tag. Its midnight launch event, held at the flagship Virgin Megastore in central London, was considered by the press to be something of a damp squib, with a turnout of around a hundred customers.

SPOnG was, of course, at the scene over the course of the evening - and reported the rather surprising announcement that each punter would be walking away with a free £2000+ Bravia TV to play their PSTriple on. Phil Harrison was also surprised - at the appearance of "more members of the media than actual punters."

Since the 2007 launch, Sony has pulled it together and transformed the PlayStation 3 into a console that handily rivals Microsoft's Xbox 360 in terms of sales and popularity - and that's despite the 360 getting a head start of two years. There have also been a huge number of stunning exclusives released for the PS3 over the last five years, including God of War 3, Killzone 2, the Motorstorm franchise and, of course, Uncharted.

Happy birthday PS3! Here's a video report of your first night that, in all fairness, does a very good job at making the event look pretty amazing. There's also an example of SCEE's marketing campaign for the console - makes you wonder how the company sold any PS3s at all, really.
