Angry Birds is a Fad Says Tetris Owner
If you owned the company that holds the rights to a classic (e.g. old) video game that can rightfully be called ubiquitous, then you’d probably see it as good sense to undermine another video game that is becoming ubiquitous. So, Tetris co-owenr Henk Rogers has taken a pop at Angry Birds.

Speaking in a recent interview with Industrygamers, Rogers - who co-owns the Tetris Company with the game’s inventor, Alexey Pajitnov, has hit out at Rovio’s smash hit.

"Angry Birds is cute and everybody plays it for a while but they get burned out and move on and they will play another game.

"But Tetris is like Happy Birthday, it keeps on going. Everybody else has games that come and go, they make the hit parade, but these are all temporary. You have to work really hard to get your unknown game to be #1, but when we re-released Tetris it became #1 even though we didn't do any marketing. We have an unfair advantage, I gotta say. I'd rather have the goose that lays the golden egg."

Basically Rogers thinks that a game is a fad based on, “I think once people have played it more than 20 or 25 years you can say it's here to stay, it's a sport, it's no longer a fad.”

What does that make Tetris compared to chess then?

Since MS dropped the Tetris team after the Hatris debacle we were wondering when Mr. Rogers would start pushing the Tetris IP - getting some publicity by rubbish'ing AB is one avenue - creating a new strong game would have been another (but obviously not an option)!
