CAVE WEEK Exclusive: The director of Akai Katana Shin has revealed how the dual analogue sticks of the PlayStation Vita will help reinvent Cave's games on the handheld.

Voicing his thoughts about the new Sony portable, Hiroyuki Kimura said to SPOnG that the many different control inputs will allow CAVE to offer as many alternative control schemes as possible. "I think it's a hardware with a future. The Vita has a touch panel, which is one the main focus features for me. It's a very interesting device in general.

"One thing I'm really focused on is that it has dual analogue sticks on top of it being a mobile device," he added. "That's a big point for us. With CAVE shooters, we want the user to be really involved in the game, so if you provide different ways of playing, you can change the way they hold the device - and they can get involved in the game on a totally different level.

"With regards to the game we’re developing for Vita, one of our goals is to reduce the number of buttons for controlling the game as much as possible. That's one of the reasons we're really focused on this twin stick aspect of the machine."

In the full exclusive interview, to be published on SPOnG later today, Kimura-san talks more about Akai Katana Shin, explaining that the original arcade version - released in 2010 - was developed with the upcoming ports on Xbox 360 in mind, with a development emphasis on adding score attacking features and improving the overall presentation.

Akai Katana Shin is due for a European release in early 2012, courtesy of Rising Star Games.

I sure hope I can just use the same style of play I use in DoDonPachi on Xbox. If I'm forced to use touch controls, or dual stick controls on a shooter I'm not buying it. I don't want that gimmicky Nintendo crap.
