CAVE: Taito Had a Big Impact on our iPhone Development
CAVE WEEK Exclusive: The manager of CAVE's smartphone development team has revealed to SPOnG that fellow Japanese developer Taito was a direct influence on how it designed its first iPhone game - and has shaped its approach to mobile development ever since.

Yukihiro Masaki explained that the studio was inspired by how Space Invaders: Infinity Gene managed to translate stick shooter controls onto a touch screen device.

"When we were creating Espgaluda II and beginning our smartphone business, the first reference that made an impact on us was Taito’s Space Invaders: Infinity Gene," Masaki said. "That was really big for us.

"Up until that point, we had been thinking about how to create games on the iPhone that were up to CAVE’s standards. The first control scheme that we had in mind was the use of gyro sensors. Then we got our hands on Infinity Gene, and what they had come up with at Taito had a big impact on us."

The full fascinating interview with Yukihiro Masaki will be published today.
