Nintendo: Hardcore Users in Wii and DS Misunderstanding

Despite all the pictures you've ever seen, the Wii and DS were not aimed at casual gamers

Despite all the TV advertising, PR pictures of shiny families, lifestyle magazine stories and tales of old people in homes having years taken off their lives by playing with the Wii or DS... despite all the casual games... you got it wrong about Ninty's machines being for casual gamers you fool.

The company's president, Saturo Iwata points out that, "First of all, we would like to keep pursuing “gaming population expansion" as our fundamental goal for the future because we believe that it is worth continuously aiming at and that it will grow the market, expand our business and improve our financial results, which could give our shareholders much return.

"On the other hand, we do not think that developing video games for casual or light users is the only way to expand the gaming population. There was a misunderstanding that Nintendo was dedicated to such games at some stage of the lifespans of the Wii and the Nintendo DS.

"We have made efforts to develop video games that are in tune with various consumer tastes; however, we have not been able to gain adequate consumer understanding regarding our intentions, while in the common perception there are no or few core users playing Nintendo platforms, which is not the case."

Now, go and apologise!

Because selling to new people means they can't tell you're just re-releasing the same old games every year or two.

Uh, Spong? He's right. They produced more 'core' games for the Wii than they did for the GameCube--just because they also produced 'casual' games, doesn't make your assertion true.

Furthermore, DrkStar, doesn't everyone kinda just re-sell you the same game every 1-2 years? It's called "sequels".
