It's been a long time since Max Payne last graced our consoles, but Rockstar Games have today announced the return of the titular vigilante seven years after the release of The Fall of Max Payne. The third game in the series is due out next March and promises to continue the "dark, gritty action experience" we know and love.

Moving the action to Sao Paulo in Brazil, Max Payne 3 sees our hero protecting a wealthy family who are targeted by criminals. As things turn sour he must save them in a bid to clear his name. Founder of Rockstar Sam Houser says "We’re excited to show fans a modern version of Max that pulls them back into his dark and twisted story.” Not as excited as we are to run about shooting stuff, Sam.

The game will include a range of multiplayer modes alongside the usual single-player story, as well as the return of everyone's favourite Max Payne function: Bullet Time. The announcement also stated that the first Max Payne game will soon be released on mobile devices with souped-up graphics and connectivity to the Rockstar Games Social Club, just like console and PC versions. More information is available at the game's official site.

With it being such a long time since the last game, this sequel will have a lot riding on it to get the name of Payne back in the gaming conciousness. Max may well be grittier than ever before, but the landscape has changed – will he still be relevant?
