After three years without a noticeable direction, Sony is redesigning PlayStation Home. And believe it or not, the application will be tweaked to have a focus on games. Fancy that.Instead of bring a clumsy copy of virtual reality program
Second Life, the service will act as a console hub for social gaming. The reason for the change? Virtual worlds just don't cut the mustard anymore, with social networking the outlet for casual gaming these days.
PlayStation Home director Jack Buser is confident the redesign will give it a new exciting focus. "This is a giant leap in the evolution of the platform. We are going to ‘up level’ games as the heart of
PlayStation Home," he told
VentureBeat. This means that
Home itself is going to become a game. The first things you see when you get into Home are games."
Arguably that should have been the first thing that happened in the application's first iteration, but better late than never, right?
Home has enjoyed a lot of success with its Xi and Sodium games, so it makes sense that the whole of the service would be redesigned to accommodate this.
The brand new
PlayStation Home will hit PS3s in the Autumn.
