Sony has revealed that the upcoming PlayStation Vita will be able to have direct connectivity with the PlayStation 3, going so far as to use the handheld as a console controller in the same fashion as Nintendo's Wii U.Sony Europe's R&D manager Phil Rogers gushed about the possibilities to
Eurogamer, highlighting ways that this new functionality could be used. "Here's a few boring technical ideas: you could drive a display from a PS3 game, for example. PS3 can send data down to Vita and Vita can display it. You could use the unique features [of Vita] - gyroscope, touch front and back - as a control device for a PS3 game."
Rogers also made mention of cross-platform play, either by "[running] software on both devices and [using] the network to sync the game states" or by good old-fashioned multiplayer matchmaking between systems.
WipEout and
Hustle Kings are games that will support cross-platform multiplayer.
Remote Play (which allows Vita to receive video output from a PS3 console) and Continuation Play (that lets users carry over saves from their PS3 and continue playing on Vita) are additional features that Rogers said would be ready for launch. Third-party publishers and developers are being courted to make use of the networked features.
Sony has been taking about handheld-to-console play for many years now, but with the Vita it may just be able to finally pull it off.
