E3 2011: Shigeru Miyamoto has announced the first Nintendo game in development for the Wii U system - a new sequel to Pikmin.
The legendary designer revealed the existence of the game at last night's Nintendo Roundtable at E3. It was mentioned that Luigi's Mansion was enjoying its tenth anniversary, when Miyamoto added that it's also the tenth anniversary of Pikmin.
"So I really want to release a Pikmin game this year. I mentioned that Pikmin was a Wii game that we were working on," he said. "But as we've been working on the Wii U hardware and looking at the beautiful graphics and controller, I think I would really like to see Pikmin on that hardware.
"So we're going to make it on that."
Miyamoto added that it won't be long before we see it on store shelves - possibly alongside the Wii U system at launch. "We've been working on the Wii Pikmin game for so long, so perhaps it won't be so long before we see it on Wii U."
Although there was a problem in that Nintendo was careful not to formally announce any internal projects for the Wii U system. "There is a problem in that," Miyamoto admitted.
"So there's kind of two sides to me here today - one is the corporate side that is wanting to follow the precedent that we've set for E3 in not announcing any official titles for the system, and then there's the other side of me that really wants to tell you that we're working on Pikmin."
