When we asked "What have they done to Spyro" back in February we meant, why has Activision made the little fella so ugly? We were not prepared for the strangeness that followed. Now Acti/Blizz has announced, "First-Ever Cross-Platform Gameplay Experience for
Skylanders Spyro's Adventure". That's a clever headline for a press release because it could lead you to believe that this announcement refers to the first ever cross-platform game 'experience'.
The release does in fact state that the game is, "the first-ever cross-platform gameplay experience across the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system, Wii, Nintendo 3DS, a variety of mobile devices, Windows PC and the web
It doesn't mean that if you're playing the game on one platform someone else can be playing against you on another platform. It means that when you play the game on one platform, having registered on a website, your stats will be uploaded so that you can then buy another console or mobile device and copy of the game and download your stats to 'level up' your character.
This is how Activision puts it, "During console and handheld gameplay, each Skylander remembers skill advancements and level-ups, allowing players to take their leveled-up Skylanders to play on any of the other platforms."
It also some with some dreary sales spiel from Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing:
"Imagine a kid taking his Skylanders toy and bringing it to life on his Xbox 360 one day, then bringing it to life on his friend's PS3 the next day, then bringing it to life inside his 3DS and playing it in the back of his parents' car the next day, then bringing it to life on the web the day after that, all the while, building his character's strength and powers across all of those platforms."
Because
Skylanders also come in physical - eg toy - form, Mr H goes OTT with, "It brings the physical and virtual worlds of play together in a whole new way."
