Sony is begun development on the PlayStation 4.

The company's executive vice president and chief financial officer, Masaru Kato, was forced to spill the beans during a conference call to investors today. He explained that Sony's increased research and development costs for the year were going towards a "future platform" for the home market.

"For the home equipment the PS3 still has a product life, but this is a platform business, so for the future platform - when we'll be introducing what product I cannot discuss that - but our development work is already under way, so the costs are incurred there," Kato said.

Kaz Hirai has recently said that the company wasn't "even at the half-way point" in regards to its proposed ten-year plan for the PlayStation 3. But the PlayStation 2 also enjoyed a ten-year plan, with the PS3 launched five years into the life cycle of the previous generation. Now may be the time to start talking about the next console.

Nintendo is unveiling its next-generation console at E3, while rumours are flying that developers are tinkering with prototypes of Microsoft's new Xbox.
