Angry Birds Man: Console Games are Dying
Peter Vesterbacka, of Angry Birds-maker Rovio obviously loves mobile platforms such as iPhone and iPad - because that's where he's made his cash. He's not so hot on consoles.

According to Venture Beat's Anthony Ha Vesterbacka was speaking "at a panel I moderated at the South by Southwest Interactive conference in Austin" when:

"Innovation in gaming has clearly moved into mobile and social, Vesterbacka said, largely because those companies are more 'nimble' — it’s easy to develop and release new content quickly.

"In fact, he said as mobile gaming (including games on tablet devices like the iPad) continues to grow, console games are “dying”. Vesterbacka scoffed at the traditional model where companies charge $40 to $50 for a game that’s difficult to upgrade. (Nokia’s Tero Ojanpera, who was also on the panel, countered that there’s still a place for consoles, because gamers aren’t going to plug tablet devices into their televisions.)"

Angry Birds, eh? Sort of Worms but against pigs who can't fight back. Innovative stuff.

Try making a successful console game then get back to us.
Success is not a crappy mobile game that tired worn out commuters play on the train home.

Keep your ports as well.

Angry Birds was, really, a bit s**t though. I mean, I'm not saying it was unpopular. That would be ridiculous. But Justin Bieber is popular. And he's an auto-tuned twerp.

I bloody well AM going to plug my "tablet device" into a TV, that's precisely why I bought an iPod Dock to HDMI adaptor the other day.

Then why is angry birds on a console? seems its OK to make money from consoles but not actually agree with their current stance in today's marketplace...hmmm,

He has a point though - about console games being a pain to update. Not necessarily all home consoles, but certainly Nintendo games are an absolute pain to offer additional content for, unless you are going to charge for it.

He might have made more money from the console versions though if they actually put some effort into the ports. From the reviews I read the control systems were rubbish making the game pretty poor to play.

Console games aren't dying, but mobile games are offering an easy viable entry point into the industry, where studio size is irrelevant. Both will co-exist as is the best way. But indeed he should really say that, after he's tried making a console game.
