Dead Island Trailer: Deep Silver Brings Zombies and Dead Children
So, someone at Deep Silver thought, "Heavy Rain, with the family thing... that kind of worked. And the zombie thing, that's working..." and along came Dead Island.

The new trailer is, it's got to be said, very, very impressive to watch. Let's hope the game has more to it than a Left4Dead goes family-emotional with RPG elements, eh.

There's been a lot of chat about this trailer. So, I'm reposting what I just posted on MCV in reference to Ben Parfitt's opinion piece.

"Arguments about whether games vs other media entail different 'laws of critcism' are irrelevant here.

"People appear to have overlooked the fact that it's an advertisement for a product not a contextualised piece of storytelling.
It is there for no other reason than to provoke a desire to buy the product.

"There is no narrative context at all. Not unless, "In Dead Island you can enjoy a tropical vacation complete with zombies. Watch the official trailer for the new survival horror video game" now passes for context?

"So, with that as context, I approached this trailer as an advert for a zombie-survival game. It turned out to be a morbid, albeit glitzy, piece of emotional exploitation complete with a by-the-numbers 'sad' soundtrack.

I came away from it with the realisation that Dead Island is yet another zombie survival game but it requires the depiction of a child's fear, pain and death to make me want to buy it more than, say, Left4Dead."

Different trailer, but it works and has me interested. Sure, there are a few zombie games out there, but most of them are all about the guns a blasting, and not so much about basic survival, like acquiring food, clean drinking water and a safe place to stay at night.

Now that the awesomeness of The Walking Dead known to many, things can be done differently, that will translate down to games. Dead Island will prove interesting if it can do this kind of stuff well.
